Aiken County Hit-and-Run Auto Accident Leaves One Dead, One Injured

A hit-and-run accident in Aiken, South Carolina has left one man dead and another woman injured.

The Aiken County auto accident occurred around 12:30 a.m. on Pine Log Road near Storm Branch Road. Robert Brooks, 48, of Beech Island stopped to help a motorist, Kathrine Bentley, 32, of Windsor who had run out of gas. Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton said that Brooks was trying to take Bentley to the gas station on his moped when a passing vehicle struck it from behind. Both vehicles were heading south, but the one that hit the moped failed to stop.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol initially announced that they were looking for a Kia Sportage, though they were unsure of the color. They also said the model was from between 2010 and 2013. Sandra Huntington, 39, of Beech Island was arrested that afternoon and has since between charged with two counts of leaving the scene of an accident resulting in great bodily injury.

Both Bentley and Brooks were taken to the hospital, but Brooks died from his injuries the following day at Georgia Health Sciences University. Ms. Bentley's condition is currently unknown. Neither Bentley nor Brooks was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

South Carolina Highway Patrol's Multi-Disciplinary Accident Investigation Team is investigating the accident. The Aiken County Coroner's Office also has an ongoing investigation.
