What is the Camp Lejeune Justice Act of 2022?

The Camp Lejeune Justice Act of 2022 was signed into law by President Biden on August 10, 2022. It allows veterans and their families who suffered various cancers and illnesses to seek legal compensation from the government for the harm caused by the contaminated water at Camp Lejeune. Claimants have until August 10, 2024, to file a claim.

The Camp Lejeune Justice Act of 2022 is one part of a much more comprehensive law called the Honoring Our PACT Act, which provides for veterans by expanding benefits and healthcare for veterans harmed by toxic exposures during their time in service around the world.

Who Does the Camp Lejeune Justice Act of 2022 Apply To?

Below is an excerpt from the Camp Lejeune Justice Act of 2022.

(a) In General.--An individual, including a veteran or the legal representative of such an individual, who resided, worked, or was otherwise exposed (including in utero exposure) for not less than 30 days during the period beginning August 1, 1953, and ending December 31, 1987, to water at Camp Lejeune that was supplied by the United States or on its behalf may bring an action in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina to obtain appropriate relief for harm which--

(1) was caused by exposure to the water;

(2) was associated with exposure to the water;

(3) was linked to exposure to the water; or

(4) the exposure to the water increased the likelihood of such harm.

In other words, if a person lived or worked at Camp Lejeune for at least 30 days between 1953 and 1987 and suffered one of the identified illnesses, he/she is able to file a claim seeking legal compensation.
