What Is A Spinal Cord Injury?
An SCI, or spinal cord injury, is an injury to the bundle of nerves that run through your spine and carry messages from your brain to the rest of your body. When the spinal cord is damaged, the nerves that carry these messages are interrupted. Your brain may no longer be properly communicating with your body, limiting mobility and feeling below the injured area.
Spinal Cord Injury Statistics
According to the National Spinal Cord Injury Statistical Center (NSCISC), the most common causes of SCIs from 2015 to 2017 included:
- Motor vehicle accidents (38.3%);
- Falls (31.6%);
- Violence (13.8%);
- Sports injuries (8.2%); and
- Medical/surgical mishaps (4.6%).
Costs of Living with a Spinal Cord Injury
Right from the start, a person suffering from a spinal cord injury faces financial instability that could continue throughout their lifetime. Though the average expenses associated with an SCI can vary greatly based on many different factors, the NSCISC provides estimates of average lifetime costs incurred with an injury to the spinal cord.
If injured at age 25, lifetime costs can range from $1,634,139 – if the person is motor functional at any level – to $4,891,398 for someone that has experienced high tetraplegia (an injury to the C1-C4 vertebrae).
